HOST Nottingham provides temporary accommodation for destitute asylum seekers and newly recognised refugees in volunteers' homes.
Two out of three asylum seekers are refused sanctuary in the UK, especially on a first asylum submission. They are not immediately deported, and are left homeless and destitute, with no right to work or to claim benefits while they gather new evidence to support a fresh claim. Some are able to sofa surf with friends, but many find themselves street homeless.
When someone is legally recognised as a refugee they become eligible for public funds and have 28 days to move on from their Home Office support. Unfortunately this is rarely enough time to find a suitable alternative and many refugees find themselves homeless just when they should be starting their new lives.
We are always looking for new hosts, so please get in touch if you would like to know more.
We also coordinate the Clothes Bank for refugees and asylum seekers at Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum.
